Efterklang: The Makedonium Band
Denmark / North Macedonia – 2024 – 81 minutes
Directed by Andreas Johnsen

What happens when you drop three Danish musicians into North Macedonia with no real plan—just a dream, a deadline, and a monument?
In Efterklang: The Makedonium Band, the beloved art-pop trio embarks on a one-week musical expedition. Their goal? Form a band with local musicians they’ve never met. Rehearse in a country whose folk traditions they barely know. Then—put on a massive show in front of the iconic Makedonium monument, a soaring symbol of independence and resistance.

Armed with flyers, curiosity, and their longtime Macedonian friend Grga, they set off across Skopje, into the mountains, and through rural villages to recruit their collaborators.

This isn’t a tour doc. It’s a warm, chaotic, and soul-stirring experiment in creativity and connection. A film about saying yes to the unknown. About how music dissolves borders. About courage, community, and the magic that happens when strangers become a band.

What makes life worth living? Can we make something beautiful with people we’ve just met?
Efterklang tried. This is what happened.
